Suez Canal traffic data has revealed that over the last week, from 11-16 June, 279 ships passed through the Suez Canal carrying a total of 16.5m tonnes of cargo.
The average number of ships transiting the canal per day is 46.5, with an average of 2.75m total tonnes of cargo.
The average cargo per ship is 59,130 tonnes.
In July 2015, the month prior to the inauguration of the new Suez Canal, the daily average number of ships transiting the canal was 47, with an average total cargo of 2.758m tonnes per day.
Two giant Danish container ships, Marchen Maersk and Majestic Maersk, passed through the canal this week with cargo weighing a combined total of 200,360 tonnes. A third ship from Malta, Al Muraykh, also passed through.
The number of ships transiting the canal from the Northern Port Said entrance reached 137, with a daily average of 22.83 ships.
Total cargo reached 7.9m tonnes there, with a daily average of 1.32m tonnes.
The number of ships that transited the canal from the Southern Suez Canal entrance reached 142, with a daily average of 23.66 ships.
Total cargo reached 8.6m tonnes, with a daily average of 1.43m tonnes.
Cargo per million tonne is the standard in calculating traffic growth in the Suez Canal, given that transit fees are calculated based on them.
