CEO of Arab Poultry Breeders Company “Ommat” Ekrema Mahasna said there were some problems the local poultry industry faced. The governmental sector bears part of the responsibility for these problems due to lack of a clear policy or strategy to develop poultry industry.

Ekrema said the government has a role setting legislations to stimulate the market and eliminate slums and that the government should play a role in regulating the industry and create a suitable environment for investment.

The company lost approximately EGP100m by investing in the establishment of a mechanic slaughterhouse after the government’s decision to ban the slaughter of poultry outside slaughterhouses. However the decision was not activated, which made the slaughterhouse without economic feasibility, Ekrema said.

The investment situation of the poultry industry in Sudan is better than Egypt since there, they get the land within weeks while in Egypt it takes years, he said. He demanded the government to be serious dealing with the challenges in the poultry to support the local poultry industry.
