An explosive device went off Monday in front of the High Court in downtown Cairo leaving 11 injured, the Ministry of Health said.

The Ministry of Interior said that the bomb was placed under a car.

The ministry added the injured included officers, conscripts, and civilians.

The street in front of the High Court has been sealed off, and Gamal Abdel Nasser Metro station closed off following the explosion. Eyewitnesses told Daily News Egypt that three emergency service vehicles struggled through traffic on their way to the scene.

Explosions have become frequent in downtown Cairo since 2014, following the rise of a militant insurgency in Sinai after the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood government in July 2013.

At the same spot of Monday’s High Court explosion in Ramsis Street, at least 13 civilians were injured by a bomb explosion in October 2014. Early in February, a bomb went off in downtown’s Qasr El-Nil street, damaging shop windows, but causing no injuries.

The deadliest of the bombings in Cairo’s downtown occurred in January 2014, as a huge bomb targeted the Cairo Security Directorate killing four and injuring at least 76 persons.
