Two armed men shot a policeman affiliated with the Traffic General Management in Al-Salam City on Sunday.

The policeman was on his motorcycle when the incident happened. “We are still looking into the criminal dimensions of the incident,” said Hany Abdel Latif, head of the Ministry of Interior’s media office.

Since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, armed groups have been targeting security personnel, especially in the North Sinai region.

A week ago, two policemen were killed and seven others were injured in a blast near the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in central Cairo.

On 16 September, one officer and five conscripts were killed by a roadside bomb in Rafah in Northern Sinai.

Besides, a police officer was killed in a drive-by shooting in Al-Minya whilst on his way to work, alongside a bombing outside of a police officer’s club on 12 September.

In another attack, a police sergeant was killed in Al-Arish just outside his house on 3 September, hours after seven alleged militants were killed and six were injured during a military operation.

The day before, 11 security personnel were killed after their security convoy hit a landmine on a road in North Sinai. Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On 28 June, unidentified gunmen stopped a bus transporting police officers and shot four of them dead nearby Al-Arish.
