Hatem Abd al-Latif, Egypt’s transport minister, announced the conclusion of the Sokhna port crisis as the port’s employees, who had previously been on strike, returned to work yesterday night.
This occurred after the employees reached an agreement with the company Platinum to work for the Dubai Ports World Company (DP World) company after the conclusion of Platinum’s contract.
Abd al-Latif stated this afternoon in a press conference held at the port of Alexandria that employees at the Sokhna port will conclude the signing of their new contracts tonight. This occurred after DP World agreed to drop a clause in their contract stipulating that employees undergo a three-month trial period before being hired permanently.
He added that work would resume at the port tonight after guarantees were made protecting workers’ rights.
This announcement came during an investigative tour of the port of Alexandria, and Abd al-Latif’s announcement of the construction of a new maritime terminal, tourist centre, and shopping mall in the area.
Egypt’s finance, investment, and tourism ministers, in addition to a number of leaders in maritime transport, held a closed-door meeting at the port where they reviewed other upcoming development projects.
