Eighteen detainees arrested for allegedly attempting to break into a local government building and burn it were released Wednesday.
Seven of those were released on an EGP 2000 per head bail said their lawyer Mohamed Hafez.
The Borg Al-Arab court renewed the detention of 22 more detainees for a further 15 days, Hafez said. The detainees were also arrested for complicity in attacking the local government building on 20 January.
The detention of political activist Hassan Mustafa was also renewed Wednesday, Hafez said. Mustafa was accused of attacking a prosecutor. His lawyer Hamdy Khalaf said Mustafa was innocent of all charges.
“He was in Cairo during the protests which broke off in Alexandria,” Khalaf said. Mustafa was also charged with inciting the protests which took place on 20 January. “His arrest aimed at preventing him from taking part in the 25 January protests,” Khalaf said.
Khalaf filed a report Tuesday claiming that Mustafa was beaten and tortured in jail. “He was beaten when he refused to enter solitary confinement,” Khalaf said.
More arrests were reported in Alexandria following the 25 January protests.
