CAIRO: An American and a Briton were among those arrested in overnight clashes between police and protesters in Cairo, the official MENA news agency said, without identifying either of them.

A military source said the two were not among 50 protesters who had been referred to the military prosecution earlier on Wednesday.

The disturbances that erupted on Tuesday night were some of the most violent in months in Cairo’s Tahrir square, which was the focal point of protests that forced veteran president Hosni Mubarak from power in February.

By sunset, calm had been restored in central Cairo as protesters made their way to Tahrir Square in response to a call by activists for an open-ended sit-in to push for democratic change.

The clashes signaled a mounting frustration at the country’s military rulers over the pace of political reform.
