CAIRO: Ten people were injured when two trains collided near the village of Hagnaya in the government of Beheira in the early hours of Friday, according to local news reports.

The first train, which was heading from Alexandria to Mansoura, broke down and stopped in Damanhour and the second train, going from Matrouh to Cairo, crashed into it from behind, according to egynews.net.

The Civil Defense Forces were able to remove the derailed train vehicle and scheduled trips resumed after a two-hour halt.

This is the first train accident to take place since the appointment of Alaa Eldin Mohamed Fahmy as the new Minister of Transportation last January.

Former Minister of Transportation Mohamed Lotfy Mansour stepped down from his position in October 2009 after taking full responsibility for the Al-Ayyat train crash which claimed 18 lives and injured 36 people.
