Energy companies raise LE 1 million for charity

CAIRO: Thirty-three teams from across the gas and oil industry joined the BG Energy Challenge 2009, raising LE 1 million that will go to fighting poverty in Upper Egypt, the company said in a statement.

From November 5-8, participants faced the mountains of Sinai’s St. Catherine’s, with its rocky landscapes, steep slopes and rugged terrain.

The sixth BG Energy Challenge-Egypt tested contestants’ physical and mental stamina, with around 200 professionals from the energy industry comprising teams from BG Egypt, BP, CB I & Lummus, Cargill, Dana Petroleum, Dana Gas, EFG Hermes, Egyptian LNG, El-Paso, ExxonMobil, INTEC, NOSPCO, and Care Egypt.

Each team had to raise a minimum of $4,000 for CARE Egypt to qualify for the BG Energy Challenge.

Day two saw participants clean up specified locations at St. Catherine’s, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tim Blackford, BG Egypt asset general manager, said, “Raising over LE 1 million is a huge achievement . the highest amount raised since the BG Energy Challenge – Egypt began.

The event was organized for BG Egypt by CARE Egypt with the support of the local Bedouin tribe. -Daily News Egypt
