Former Zamalek president charged with assault on Egyptian Chief Justice

CAIRO: Former Zamalek chairman Mortada Mansour has been charged with assault on Egyptian Chief Justice Sayed Nofal, Dokki suburb District Attorney’s office said on Wednesday.

Mansour, who is currently in custody, will undergo trial on Thursday after his case was put on the fast track.

District Attorney Wael Ihsan told Al-Ahram newspaper that Mansour has been notified of the situation.

The problem started when Mansour and a number of his aides bolted into Nofal’s office at the Supreme Administrative Court of the State s Council headquarters on Saturday.

Mansour lying in a hospital bed to avoid being arrested Nofal accused Mansour of aggravated assault against a public servant and defamation of the Egyptian judicial system.

Mansour and his men were contained by security but the renowned lawyer collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital under tight security.

He was later escorted to the Giza police headquarters where he is currently being held.

Mansour’s attack was provoked by the court ruling that upheld the former Minster of Youth, Mamdouh Al-Beltagi, to remove him from his post as Zamalek president.
