CAIRO: Instead of a boring lecture on Egypt s development projects, Sailing the Nile awareness campaign organized eight free fellucca tours on the Nile Friday at El Gezirah garden in Zamalek from 1-6:30 pm, where awareness sessions were conducted.

The eight felluccas sailed from Aswan to Cairo for 41 days between Oct. 29 and Dec. 8, carrying flags promoting the most important development projects the country seeks to complete by 2015.

The choice of place made the event accessible to almost anyone walking by the river or driving on Kasr El Nil bridge. Many pedestrians, couples and families, gathered to watch the event s entrainment programs that included an African dance and two music concerts by bands Resalah and Bashayer.

The aim of the campaign was to make people walking by the river in Aswan, Luxor, Qena, Sohag, Assiut, Al-Minya and Beni-Suef recognize Egypt s most important social goals: eliminating poverty, enhancing the quality of education, women s rights, the environment, health, fighting HIV, and seeking global partnership for development.

This year s festival is the first of its kind. We chose the Nile theme because the Nile is considered the source of life in Egypt, said Harvey Ibrahim, president of Rotaract Heliopolis and the media organizer of the event.
