CAIRO: An Egyptian was killed and 35 others, including German tourists, were hurt Tuesday when their cruise boat struck a bridge over the Nile as it tried to pass underneath, causing a canopy on the top deck to collapse, police officials said.

The cruise boat, King Tut 2, was approaching its final destination in the southern town of Qena when it tried the pass under the bridge. The canopy was knocked down, killing an Egyptian employee, police officials said.

Twenty-seven German tourists and eight Egyptian staffers were injured and taken to hospitals, police said. The cruise ship was traveling from Luxor, Egypt s main pharaonic site in the south. Police were investigating the cause of the accident. AP
