Postponement of proceedings in trial for Alaa and Gamal Mubarak

The Cairo Criminal Court postponed the trial of former president Hosni Mubarak’s sons Alaa and Gamal and seven other businessmen to 19 March to hear from civil claimants and lawyers as witnesses in the proceedings.

Alaa and Gamal are accused of making illicit gains from the Egyptian National Bank and are also facing charges of inside trading in the Egyptian Exchange.

On 9 May, the court sentenced Hosni Mubarak and his sons to a prison sentece of three years for charges related to the seizure of public funds through the embezzeletment of money specified for the presidential palace. They were also fined EGP 125mn, the equivalent sum seized by the defendants by forging the presidential budget in official statements.

The seven businessmen involved in the case are Ayman Ahmed Fathi Hussein Suleiman, Ahmed Fathi Hussein Suleiman, Yasser Soliman Hisham Mallawani, Ahmed Naeem Ahmed Badr, Hassan Mohammed Hassanein Heikal, Amr Mohammed Ali Al-Kadi, and Sobhy Hussein Lotfy El-Sherbini.
