Interim president Adly Mansour has promised Egypt’s youth supplementary constitutional declarations to clarify and amend the document’s most politically controversial articles, according to the 6 April Movement’s official Facebook page.
The announcement followed a meeting between the youth and the interim president on Tuesday night where the youth expressed their concerns with the new constitutional declaration.
The meeting included youth from different political backgrounds, including Ahmed Maher and Israa Abdel Fattah from the 6 April Movement and Shady El-Ghazaly Harb from the Youth of the January 25 Revolution. Mostafa Hegazy, the president’s advisor for political and strategic affairs, and Ahmed El-Moslimany, the president’s media advisor were also at the meeting.
Tamarod, the main organisers of the nation-wide mass protests on 30 June, were represented at the meeting by Mahmoud Badr and Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz. According to the group’s official Twitter account, Tamarod sent Mansour proposed adjustments to the constitutional declaration, which he accepted.
The proposed adjustments, they said, concerned the first article, which highlights the importance of Islamic Law in governing Egypt. According to Tamarod, this resembles an article which Islamist politicians used for their own benefit, making it a source of concern.
Acording to state-owned Al-Ahram, Vice President for Foreign Affairs Mohamed ElBaradei appointed Mona Thoul-Fakkar to draft an adjustment to the constitutional declaration and present it to the president.
Mohamed Adel, a 6 April leader, said that during the meeting it was agreed that a few youth representatives should travel to different countries to explain the 30 June revolution to the international community and international political leaders in order to create “a reversal of the Gehad and Essam El-Haddad influence” on the West.
Adel also added that it was agreed during the meeting that the youth will be a “significant” part of the new cabinet in order to better represent Egypt’s young population.
On Monday the interim president announced a constitutional declaration that would act as a guide to Egypt during the six-month transitional period. Also on Tuesday he appointed Hazem El-Beblawy prime minister and asked him to form a cabinet within the next two days.
