The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) released a statement Wednesday morning condemning the extradition of Libyan national Ahmed Qaddaf al-Dam, saying that doing so would put his life in danger.
“He will not receive a fair trial,” said Deputy Director of EOHR Tarek Zaghloul. “They will violate his personal and human rights.”
The EOHR also condemned the extradition of two other Libyan nationals arrested Tuesday: former Libyan ambassador to Egypt Ali Maria and Mohamed Ibrahim.
“The EOHR emphasises that handing them over to the Libyan officials will pose a severe threat to their lives,” the statement read. “We urge Egyptian security officials not to extradite them.”
Qaddaf al-Dam was arrested by Egyptian police outside his home in Zamalek Tuesday after an exchange of gunfire between security forces and Qaddaf al-Dam’s bodyguards.
The police were working in conjunction with the Egyptian International Cooperation Office and Interpol who had placed a warrant out for Qaddaf al-Dam’s arrest, according to Mohamed Al-Serty, media spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior.
Qaddaf al-Dam has been turned over to the International Cooperation Office and the office of the prosecutor general who are working on the case, Al-Serty said. They are currently in discussions with the current Libyan ambassador over whether or not to extradite Qaddaf al-Dam to Libya.
State-owned Al-Ahram reported that a Libyan delegation had been sent to Cairo to expedite Qaddaf al-Dam’s extradition, but Al-Serty denied this.
“The decision of whether or not to extradite Qaddaf al-Dam has not yet been made,” Al-Serty said. “It is being handled by the International Cooperation Office and the prosecutor general.”
Qaddaf al-Dam is wanted for his role in the regime of his cousin, slain former dictator Muammar Gaddafi . Until the fall of the regime in 2011, al-Dam had permanent residence in Cairo and oversaw Egyptian relations with Libya, according to AFP.
No one from the prosecutor general’s office or the Foreign Ministry could be reached for comment.
