Egypt’s Local Development and Environment Ministry and Qalyubeya governorate have opened two waste transfer stations with a combined capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day, along with a new impound facility capable of accommodating up to 1,200 vehicles, as part of efforts to upgrade local infrastructure and improve asset management.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad and Qalyubeya Governor Hossam Abdel Fattah inaugurated the waste transfer stations in Arab Al-Aliqat in Khanka and Marsafa in Banha, the ministry said.
Each station is designed to handle around 1,000 tonnes of waste per day and aims to improve waste collection, consolidation and transportation while reducing travel times and uncontrolled waste accumulation.
The Khanka station was built on around four feddans at a cost of $3.113 million, while the Marsafa facility covers roughly three feddans and cost nearly $2 million.
Both facilities include waste loading and unloading platforms, administrative buildings, maintenance workshops, staff facilities and equipment waiting areas.
Awad said the stations were implemented under the World Bank-funded Greater Cairo Air Pollution Management and Climate Change Project and are intended to strengthen the infrastructure supporting Egypt’s waste-management system.
She also instructed local authorities to monitor the areas served by the stations daily to prevent waste from accumulating in the streets.
In a separate project, Awad and Abdel Fattah opened a vehicle and seized-property impound facility in Abu Zaabal, Khanka, covering 37,800 square metres and capable of accommodating up to 1,200 vehicles.
The site includes a 700-square-metre inspection area, a 2,000-square-metre auction yard, vehicle maintenance workshops and a car wash.
Awad said consolidating impounded vehicles at the purpose-built site would free up land currently used for vehicle storage in populated areas, allowing it to be redeveloped for public-service and development projects.
The facility was implemented by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority for Qalyubia governorate based on designs prepared by Cairo University’s Architectural and Engineering Design Support Center, the ministry said.
