Egypt and Mauritania have explored opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation in healthcare, with discussions focusing on medical training, pharmaceutical collaboration, preventive healthcare and medical tourism during a meeting between Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, and Mauritania’s Ambassador to Egypt, El Houssein Ould Sidi Abdallah.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population, Abdel Ghaffar reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare partnership with Mauritania through the exchange of expertise, capacity-building initiatives and technical support across a range of medical fields.
Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the meeting reviewed progress on existing cooperation programmes and explored avenues for expanding collaboration in professional training, skills development and specialised consultancy services.
The discussions also highlighted opportunities for closer cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. Abdel Ghaffar directed ministry officials to organise a visit for the Mauritanian delegation to the Arab Company for Drug Industries and Medical Appliances (ACDIMA), allowing them to gain first-hand insight into Egypt’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities and regulatory framework.
The two sides further discussed preventive healthcare and ways Mauritania could benefit from Egypt’s experience in disease prevention, public health programmes and healthcare management.
Medical tourism was another key area of focus, with both countries examining mechanisms to facilitate treatment for Mauritanian patients in Egyptian hospitals and specialised medical centres.
In addition, the meeting explored the possibility of deploying Egyptian cardiologists to Mauritanian hospitals as part of broader efforts to enhance healthcare services, build local capacity and transfer specialised medical expertise.
For his part, Ambassador Ould Sidi Abdallah expressed appreciation for Egypt’s continued support to Mauritania, commending the significant progress achieved by Egypt’s healthcare sector and its contribution to supporting Arab and African countries through medical cooperation and expertise-sharing initiatives.
The meeting was attended by Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Health, Amr Kandil; Adviser to the Minister for International Health Relations, Mohamed Gad; Director-General of International Health Relations, Susan Zanaty; and officials from the Mauritanian Embassy in Cairo.
The talks come amid Egypt’s broader efforts to expand healthcare partnerships across Africa and the Arab world, with a particular focus on medical training, pharmaceutical production, healthcare services and technical cooperation.
