Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has appointed Mohamed El-Gawsaky as the executive director of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) for a one-year term, according to a government statement.
The appointment is part of state efforts to enhance the investment climate and stimulate economic growth. El-Gawsaky brings more than two decades of professional experience across the government and private sectors in fields including planning, investment attraction, and the development of policies supportive of the business environment.
El-Gawsaky currently serves as the Assistant Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade for planning, trade, and digital transformation. In this capacity, he leads the ministry’s efforts to expand Egypt’s foreign trade capabilities and strengthen international partnerships.
As part of his mandate, El-Gawsaky is responsible for formulating mechanisms to develop and improve the efficiency of the investment and foreign trade systems. These efforts aim to enhance the international competitiveness of the Egyptian economy and improve the local business climate to attract direct investment.
Prior to his current ministerial role, El-Gawsaky served as undersecretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. During this tenure, he led the central department for international relations, acting as the primary liaison between the Egyptian government, international organisations, and multinational corporations. His role focused on strengthening partnerships, driving cooperation, and attracting investment into the communications and information technology sectors.
Before entering the public sector, El-Gawsaky spent more than 15 years in the private sector, holding several senior executive positions at local and international companies across the Middle East, North Africa, and emerging markets. His responsibilities included business development to attract investment, operations management, strategy formulation, and the adoption of emerging technologies.
El-Gawsaky holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Ain Shams University and a Master of Business Administration with honours from the American University in Cairo. He has received several awards in recognition of his academic excellence.
