Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Monday met with the heads of the country’s new city authorities, directing them to increase efforts in sanitation, maintenance, and waste removal to restore the civilised appearance of the new urban developments.

“The responsibility for restoring the general civilised appearance of the new cities lies on the shoulders of the heads of these cities’ authorities,” Madbouly said during the meeting at the government’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. He urged them to intensify their daily field tours, stating that their role “is not to be in the office or to rely on reports submitted to them.”

The prime minister stressed that the heads of the new cities must give top priority to preserving the public appearance and quality of life in these cities. He also called for them to follow up on the implementation of contracts with sanitation and maintenance companies, especially given the sufficient resources available in the cities’ budgets.

Madbouly pointed out that the new cities have advantages that support continuous development, including their modern, planned design, lower population densities compared to other areas, and available budgets.

He tasked the Minister of Housing, Sherif El-Sherbiny, who was also present at the meeting, with overseeing the development of clear action plans by each city head to restore the cities’ lustre. “Any new city head whose efforts are not consistent with the required target will be replaced to give an opportunity to others to continue the efforts of development and urban enhancement,” Madbouly warned.

For his part, the housing minister thanked the prime minister for the meeting and said that continuous meetings and coordination are held with the heads of the new cities. He affirmed that the key elements that define any new city are cleanliness, maintenance, landscaping, lighting, and the general visual image.

“The presence of the head of the authority on the ground is what moves the entire authority,” El-Sherbiny said, stressing that daily field follow-up is the “basis for the success of the head of the city authority.”

The heads of the city authorities expressed their thanks to the prime minister and affirmed that the points he highlighted would be important items on their work agenda in the coming period.
