The National Wages Council (NWC) has approved increasing the minimum wage in the private sector from EGP 2,700 to EGP 3000 per month as of July 2023.

The approval came at the NWC’s Monday meeting chaired by Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development.

The meeting witnessed the presence of the Minister of Labour Hassan Shehata, the Head of the National Council for Women (NCW) Maya Morsi, Head of the Central Agency for Organization and Administration (CAOA) Saleh El-Sheikh, and the Head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) Khairat Barakat.

During the meeting, El-Said announced that today’s meeting was based on NWC’s agreement to hold a meeting at the end of the first half of the year. This meeting discussed economic conditions and reviewed the private sector’s minimum wage.

El-Said asserted that the NWC’s decision to raise the minimum wage to EGP 3,000 is commensurate with the council’s policy of achieving a balance between workers and business owners and in line with current economic changes and high inflation rates.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labor, Shehata affirmed that this substantial increase in the minimum wage comes within the framework of the Egyptian state’s policies for private sector workers that aim to provide them with a decent life.

He also stressed that while the Egyptian government seeks to preserve the rights of workers, it is also keen on the stability of all establishments, increasing production, and supporting all companies that need support.

“Egypt’s government is also standing by the rights of workers and educating them about their duties in light of the culture of the ‘New Republic’,” he added.

Coordinator of the National Council for Wages, Hanan Nazeer, reviewed a number of the Council’s results of the preliminary meetings held with representatives of workers and employers’ unions regarding the files that were discussed in the Council’s appointment, along with the discussion of a proposal to establish a committee within the Council’s committees to organize the work of the sectoral skills council.
