Domestic liquidity in banking sector increases to EGP 7.8trn in February 2023: CBE

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has revealed that the volume of domestic liquidity in the banking sector increased to EGP 7.823trn in February 2023, compared to EGP 7.710trn in January 2023.

In a recent report, the CBE indicated that the money supply recorded EGP 1.696trn in February, compared to EGP 1.643trn in January, while the volume of cash circulating outside the banking system amounted to EGP 812.6bn, compared to EGP 797.1bn.

According to the CBE, total non-governmental deposits in local currency in banks operating in the Egyptian market rose to EGP 5.549trn in February 2023, compared to about EGP 5.474trn in January 2023.

The CBE said that demand deposits recorded EGP 883.777bn in February, compared to EGP 846.011bn in January 2023, pointing out that the share of the public business sector of these deposits amounted to EGP 52.309bn, the private sector EGP 584.260bn, and the household sector EGP 247.424bn.

He added that the volume of time deposits and savings certificates amounted to EGP 4.665trn in February, compared to EGP 4.628trn in January. The share of the public business sector is EGP 72.150bn, the private sector EGP 285.932bn, and the household sector EGP 4.304tn.

The CBE revealed that total non-governmental deposits in foreign currencies in banks increased to EGP 1.461trn in February 2023, compared to EGP 1.438trn in January 2023.

The CBE said that demand deposits in foreign currencies amounted to EGP 385.082bn, while the volume of time deposits and savings certificates amounted to EGP 1.076tn.

According to CBE, the public business sector’s share of demand deposits in private foreign currencies amounted to EGP 26.712bn, the private business sector EGP 249.633bn, and the household sector about EGP 108.875bn.

He added that the public business sector’s share of term deposits and savings certificates in foreign currencies amounted to EGP 67.107bn, private business sector deposits EGP 240.218bn, and the household sector EGP 769.418bn.
