Egypt condemned in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday the brutal terrorist act that targeted an Iraqi police patrol in the governorate of Kirkuk, which resulted in a number of deaths and wounded.

The state offered its sincere condolences to the brotherly Iraqi government and people and to the families of the deceased, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Egypt also reaffirmed its solidarity and full support for Iraq in its fight against terrorism and its confidence that such despicable acts will only strengthen Iraq’s determination to defeat terrorism and eradicate its roots.

A security source in Iraq said on Sunday that eight members of the security forces were killed in an explosion of an explosive device in Kirkuk in the north of the country, adding that a gunman was killed near the scene of the explosion after the launch of a major search operation.

One gunman fell near the scene where the IED exploded, they said, adding that a security force conducted a search operation following the attack.

Eventually, security forces clashed with an armed group near the scene of the blast, which led to the gunman’s fall. He noted that “a large-scale search operation is under way in the area to search for other gunmen.”

Furthermore, AFP quoted two security sources as saying that ISIL was responsible for the attack

The sources added that the attack was accompanied by a “direct attack with light and medium weapons” in the village of Shalal Al-Matar, 65 km from the centre of Kirkuk.
