Egypt’s Environment Minister discusses cooperation with WB delegation

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad held an extensive meeting with a delegation from the World Bank to discuss the latest developments in the preparation of the Country Development and Climate Report, which the WB is preparing, in addition to the bank’s new Development Policies Financing Report to support development sectors.

During the meeting, the WB’s delegation pointed out that the Development Policies Report aims to identify the best procedures and policies that achieve effective implementation steps by supporting the transformation of strategies into actual actions on the ground that achieve a positive impact on the development process. 

They also reviewed a summary of the areas of interest in the report, including water management and agriculture and its relationship in the various sectors and investment, especially in light of the measures taken by Egypt to improve irrigation and water management methods. 

Further areas of interest include some models of the relationship between climate and heat and its effects on water, food security, the economic aspect and the quality of life of local residents such as farmers and fishermen, opportunities for private sector involvement, and support for Egypt in confrontation and adaptation measures. 

Moreover, they discussed improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions from the industrial and transportation sectors, and policies for financing energy projects and engaging the private sector to support both mitigation and adaptation measures.

For her part, Fouad reviewed some features of the development of environment and development policies in Egypt, including the establishment of a national vision for climate reform based on Egypt’s 2050 National Strategy for Climate Change, facilitating the implementation of translating the strategy into projects and executive procedures and disseminating them in all sectors, and supporting the establishment of units for sustainable development and climate change in each ministry.

Furthermore, she noted that the Ministries of Environment and Water Resources and Irrigation are cooperating in the field of promoting effective economic growth capable of facing the effects of climate change in coastal areas in the context of the national strategy for the blue economy in Egypt.
