Egypt’s Al-Sisi, CIA Director address regional, international issues

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received. on Sunday, US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns, in Cairo to discuss several issues of mutual concern including the latest updates in the Near East. 

The meeting was held in presence of Egyptian General Intelligence Service (GIS) Chief Abbas Kamel, and US Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan Cohen.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan, the Eastern Mediterranean, Libya, the Palestinian Cause, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency spokesperson, the meeting witnessed discussions on ways to enhance security and intelligence cooperation between the two countries on various related issues. 

During the meeting Al-Sisi stressed the importance that Egypt attaches to strengthening the solid cooperation between the two countries in various fields, especially at the security and intelligence levels in light of the spread of the threat of terrorism and extremism. 

For his part, William Burns conveyed greetings of US President Joe Biden, expressing his country’s pride in the constructive cooperation and close relations that bind the US with Egypt. 

Burns also stressed the keenness of Washington to continue coordination with Egypt regarding various challenges, especially in light of developments in the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean and the African continent. 

He also praised Al-Sisi’s efforts to strengthen security and stability regionally, which has consolidated Egypt’s role as an axis of balance for regional security as a whole.

In May, President Al-Sisi received a phone call from his US counterpart Joe Biden, addressing various issues of mutual interest for the two countries including the latest updates in the Middle East and the River Nile Basin. 

During the first conversation between the two leaders, Biden thanked Egypt for its successful diplomacy “to end the recent hostilities in Israel and Gaza and ensure violence does not reoccur.”
