The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) announced on Monday that it has recently been monitoring the unauthorised promotion on social media of thermal scanners for diagnosing the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The thermal scanners have been promoted on social media for sale in the Egyptian market by anonymous sources.

In a statement, the authority stressed that all scanners for detecting the virus are imported only for the benefit of government authorities competent to detect and treat the new illness. The EDA added that it is not authorised to sell or circulate these scanners through any other party.

The EDA further said that it regularly monitors and inspects all companies importing coronavirus diagnostic scanners of all kinds. This measure is taken to ensure adherence to the procedures, and ensuring those scanners are not supplied to private laboratories and pharmacies.

It stressed that it, and the concerned supervisory authorities, will take all legal measures to control the local drug market and outlets for selling medications and medical supplies.

The EDA warned that all those who violate and manipulate the health of Egyptian citizens will be firmly dealt with.

The authority called upon the citizens to seek advice from the authorised health service providers in this regard. It also recommended citizens take all necessary precautions to curb the spread of the coronavirus, and ignore attempts to exploit the critical situation in the country.
