Plainclothes security forces raided the headquarters of Al-Tareeq news website on Sunday over the course of two hours and seized the reporters’ mobile phones and national ID cards, according to local media reports.

Security forces inspected the office’s computers and cameras, holding all journalists and employees in the office during the raid.

Fareed Zahran, the news website’s owner, told Daily News Egypt that after several calls to legal and security officials the raid ended without any journalist being arrested or anything being seized from the newspaper.

He added that the security forces raided the office for reasons pertaining to the website’s licence, and confirmed that the news website’s documents are legal.

Fareed is also the head of the Egyptian Democratic Party, which was among the parties that rejected the National Dialogue Youth forum sponsored by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

When Fareed was asked whether there is any relation between his party’s boycott of the forum and the raid, he said that he is unsure, as the exact reason behind the raid remains unclear.
