The German University in Cairo (GUC) has terminated its contract with the renowned architect Tarek Naga after graduation projects contained some content that was deemed “unethical” by the university.
Student Hussein Salem told Daily News Egypt that the university tore apart parts of his graduation project and that of his friend’s, without their permission or the permission of the dean of the faculty of architecture.
Salem said that Naga is an exceptional professor that uses innovative ways to teach, and encourages liberal education within the framework of academia. He added that his project was about ‘divinity’ from a feminine perspective. His friend Mina Maurice’s project tackled nudity throughout the different eras.
“We contacted Dr. Naga when we found out about what happened, and the university couldn’t reach an agreement with him as he insisted on adhering to his ways of teaching. When we contacted the dean of the faculty, he claimed that the parent of a student complained about the explicit content of the projects,” Salem concluded.
The students of GUC started a hashtag on social media denouncing the destruction of their friends’ projects and how it implies that the university is not open to different methods of teaching.
