Master’s degree holders released following 24 hours in custody

Master’s degree and PhD holders’ protests have recently increased, demanding employment by government amid state negligence

The Qasr Al-Nil Prosecution released on Tuesday three master’s degree holders on EGP 1,000 bail, following their arrest Monday on charges of crowding and inciting violence.

The master’s degree holders were kept in custody for 24 hours after security forces arrested them while protesting in front of the parliament headquarters. They protested against the state’s negligence towards them and the difficulty for them to get employed in the government.

Amid the continuous protests held by master’s degree and PhD holders, a member of parliament said on Tuesday during a session that this crisis is a “headache” for the government. In a press statement, the MP added: “Will the researches carried out by those protestors be of any help to us in the administrative body? Or have their carried out researches been ‘nonsense’?”

Security forces arrested 18 post-graduate protestors last week. The police dispersed the protest and escorted them to Qasr Al-Nil police station. They were shortly released after Lawyers Syndicate head Sameh Ashour sent a defence team to represent them.

In recent months, several post-graduates have organised more than 45 rallies demanding employment by the government. Several were arrested during these protests and were released shortly after. However, the government still neglects their demands.
