Clashes erupted Wednesday between militants and security personnel in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid.

The military spokesman said in a statement that around 70 militants launched attacks on five checkpoints. The clashes left 22 militants dead, while 10 soldiers were killed or injured, according to the spokesperson.

However, various media outlets gave conflicting numbers, with the Associated Press citing military and security officials as stating that at least 30 soldiers were killed.

The attacks follow the assassination of Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat on Monday, which marked the most prominent attack by militants in recent times.
