Privately owned media outlets are planning a blackout in protest over President Mohamed Morsy’s constitutional declaration and the draft constitution.

Al Masry Al Youm confirmed on Saturday that it would be striking on Tuesday.

The editor in chief of Shorouk newspaper said “the board will meet on Monday to decide whether or not to strike.” He added, “I think they will decide to strike.”

The press syndicate published on its website that it supports the blackout and “calls on all fellow union members to follow the lead of those newspapers in the blackout and adopt the slogan ‘No to dictatorship’”

These announcements come two days after the Freedom of Expression Defence Committee put out a call for newspapers to print blank papers on Tuesday, reported Ahram.

Some TV channels are also expected to stop broadcasting on Wednesday.
