CAIRO: Fourteen members of Coptic Maspero Youth Union jointly resigned on Wednesday due to what they described as “the union’s hostility against the church and the attacks against Pope Shenouda.”

Media committee coordinator and one of those who submitted their resignation, Fady Youssif, told Daily News Egypt that reasons for the resignation include: “The continuous chaos inside the union’s meetings; the control by certain people of the top positions and their abuse of power, not holding those who insulted the union and spread tensions among its members accountable; and unilateral decision making.”

Another resigning union member Magda Eissa told Daily News Egypt that there are attempts to fix the problems, so that the union could continue tackling Coptic issues.

“When I signed the resignation, I tried to exercise some pressure on my colleagues to make them pay more attention to the problems we listed as our reasons for resignation,” she added.

Eissa withdrew her resignation on Thursday, saying she realized many of these problems could be solved by dialogue.

The resignation highlighted 11 reasons for the resignation, mainly “hostility” against the church and the Pope “which was very apparent when the political committee removed the Pope’s remarks from its website when he said he is against foreign intervention.”
