The fact that Maroon 5 are the first international band to perform in Egypt after the revolution is very fitting. Although not as political as big rock bands like U2, Coldplay or Pink Floyd, Maroon 5 are no strangers to politics.

With their hit song “Makes me Wonder” aimed at reflecting their frustration with US politics, namely with regards to the war on Iraq, and their keyboardist sometimes sporting the Palestinian flag on his shirt, it is safe to assume that given Egypt’s recent events, the band is as excited about their visit as their fans are.

As part of their world tour, Maroon 5 will perform live at the Gezira Youth Center in Zamalek on April 19 for the first time in Egypt. The concert is organized by Nile Promotions and Events Plus.

While still in high school, lead singer Adam Levine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, bass guitarist Mickey Madden, and drummer Ryan Dusick formed a garage band called Kara’s Flowers and released an album in 1997.

They were later joined by guitarist James Valentine and developed into Maroon 5, releasing the debut album “Songs About Jane” in 1998. The album became an instant hit with songs like including “Harder To Breathe” “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved,” earning them two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Group.

Their second album “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” also went multi-platinum with hit songs such as “Makes me Wonder,” “Little of your Time” and “Wake Up Call.”

Maroon 5 are now on tour to promote their latest album, “Hands All Over,” released last September. The album includes hit singles such as “Misery,” and “Not Gonna Leave this Bed.”

The band is expected to treat fans to songs from their latest album, as well as popular hits from their previous albums.

Tickets are on sale at LE 350 and LE 750. For more information, please visit: www.maroon5egypt.com.
