CAIRO: A protest against inflation, organized Monday by the Kefaya Movement for Change and other opposition groups, in front of the Ministry of Social Solidarity ended shortly after a handful of protestors managed to break through the security that was cordoning the area.

“Security allowed a small group of protestors and media to assemble and then surrounded the protest and prevented a large number of people from joining the protestors,” Abdel Halim Qandil, general coordinator of Kefaya, told reporters after the protest.

Qandil said that they decided to move the protest to another location without providing further details.

The protest was set to take place in front of the cabinet but was moved to the Ministry of Social Solidarity hours before its scheduled time

Several streets surrounding the ministry were closed with pedestrians instructed by security to take alternative routes while the central security forces surrounded the protestors and plain-clothed security personnel closed the streets.

Cameramen and journalists who came after the beginning of the protest were banned from covering it.
