Seminar on the 25th anniversary of the African Human Rights Protection System opens today

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights, the law department of the American University in Cairo, the International Center for the Legal Protection of Human Rights (Interights), the Open Society Justice Initiative, and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights are holding a joint seminar on the African System of Human Rights Protection at the Helnan Shepheard Hotel today.

Leading human rights lawyers from the Middle East and Europe, activists from a wide range of African nations, as well as the former chair and current vice-chair of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights will examine and debate a wide range of topics related to the evolution and future of the system.

In essence, the seminar will concentrate on the evolution of the African Human Rights Protection System, the system’s contributions to international human rights law, and future opportunities and challenges of the system.

In addition, representatives from member states and African civil society organizations will voice their opinions on their personal experiences with the African System of Human Rights Protection over the last 25 years.
