Award winning lawyer and political activist Mahienour El-Massry wrote a letter from prison on Monday, criticising recent political events and demanding the fall of oppressive regimes.

A copy of the letter, published on the Free Mahienour official Facebook page, read: “We have been dreaming of a nation that accommodates our dreams.”

“And we realised the only way to enable this nation to thrive is to fight all those who consider themselves gods, convincing people that the nation will fall if they step down.”

Al-Massry spoke of “those who convince the people that their freedom is a conspiracy”.

In her letter, Al-Massry also criticised the recent raid on the Press Syndicate carried out by security forces, the maritime demarcation deal that transferred the sovereignty of Tiran and Sanafir islands to Saudi Arabia.

“There is a state of idiocy and superiority in dealing with the Tiran and Sanafir islands issue. The military regime will continue to hate any form of dissent. The military regime hates the people themselves and considers them incapacitated individuals and shuts down their public spaces.”

Al-Massry further expressed solidarity with journalists who stood against the storming of their syndicate, believing that no one should give up hope for freedom, “even if the only channel left is to write letters from prison”, she concluded.

In May 2015, Alexandria’s Al-Raml Misdemeanor Appeals Court ordered the detention of activists Mahienour El-Massry and Youssef Sha’ban alongside eight other defendants for two years in prison and a fine of EGP 50,000 on charges of breaking into the Raml police station.

Al-Massry won the 2014 Ludovic Trarieux Award, which is given out annually to a lawyer for defending human rights.
