A group of tourists were attacked by gunmen Thursday morning while visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza, which was concurrent with the Coptic holidays.
The Ministry of Interior said in an official statement about 15 gunmen gathered in front of a hotel located near the famous touristic site and threw fireworks and rubber bullets at the hotel and a tourist bus in front of it and no casualties reported. The statement also said that security forces managed to disperse the attackers and arrest them to take legal measures against them.
Meanwhile, security official major general Khaled Shalaby told local news websites that two men riding motorcycles threw rubber bullets at the hotel. Checkpoints were set in the vicinity of the attack to arrest the suspects.
The attack comes few months after the Russian plane crash in North Sinai, which left no survivors and a worsening tourism economy for Egypt. The Russian federal security announced on 17 November that the plane crash was caused by a bomb and that there were traces of a homemade explosive device containing 1 kg of TNT in the wreckage.
