A late Monday night drive-by shooting in Port Said has killed one police conscript and left another injured, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

Four assailants on two motorcycles without license plates opened fire on security forces guarding a customs office at the port, said the ministry.  Security forces returned fire, but the attackers escaped.

Conscript Mohamed Shaaban, 21, was shot in the abdomen and died early Tuesday while in surgery at the Port Said Military Hospital. Conscript Mohammed Eid El-Shahat was shot in the right shoulder, but survived the attack.

The Ministry of Interior said it is ramping up its efforts to catch those responsible for the attack.

“The security forces have intensified their efforts to identify the perpetrators and caught and the weapon used [in the shooting],” said a ministry statement.

Attacks on military and police personnel have run rampant across Egypt since the 3 July ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.  Two police officers were injured in a similar attack on 23 September when unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Port Said’s Al-Sharq police station.
