CAIRO: Culture Minister Farouk Hosny urged Egyptian viewers to drop watching mainstream action films for the sake of the more art-house features that will be screened during the Cairo International Film Festival.

In a joint press conference early Tuesday with the Spanish Culture Minister Cesar Antonio Molina, Hosny said that Spanish cinema is “serious and profound, expressing hope that Egyptian audiences would appreciate it.

Spain is the guest of honor of this year’s festival. “There is a fantastic Spanish group that will perform in tonight’s opening ceremony, Hosny said, hours before the opening ceremony.

The Festival started on Monday, kicking off with a press conference for British film star Julia Ormond.

Molina expressed his appreciation for choosing his country as the guest of honor, adding that he hopes for more cooperation in different sectors between the two countries.

Aside from the ongoing cooperation in the field of antiquities, joint film productions are another potential venue, Hosny said.
