The number of credit cards at banks operating in the Egyptian market increased to about 3.825m cards as of the end of June, compared to 3.28m cards in December 2015—an increase of 545,000 cards, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).
The CBE said in a recent report that the number of debit cards issued to customers as of June amounted to about 13.2m cards, compared to about 12.292m at the end of December 2015—an increase of 908,000 cards.
The CBE also revealed in its report the number of prepaid cards issued by banks operating in the local market totalled approximately 8.23m cards in June 2016, compared to 7.625m cards in December 2015, an increase of 605,000 cards.
The CBE added in its report that banks had 9,031 ATM machines at the close of June 2016, compared to 8,443 ATM machines in December 2015, an increase of 588 ATMs.
The number of electronic Points of Sale (POS) in the Egyptian market increased to around 64,349 devices as of the end of June, compared to about 59,359 devices at the end of December 2015, an increase of 4,990 devices.
The report said the number of employees in Egypt’s banking sector rose to about 110,376 employees at the end of June, compared to about 108,261 employees at the end of December 2015, increasing by 2,115 employees.
