The Egyptian army extended condolences to the UAE over the killing of three soldiers during operations by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

The armed forces expressed condolences to the death of “martyrs of duty from the United Arab Emirates” who were killed on Saturday while “conducting their national duty within the ranks of the Arab coalition to restore security and stability to Yemen”, according to a statement by the army spokesperson.

The UAE armed forces had announced the news, but did not specify details on their death.

Both Egypt and the UAE joined the Saudi Arabian coalition that was launched in March in support of Yemeni president Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, to thump down an insurgency by Shi’a Houthi rebels who took over the capital Sana’a earlier this year.

Earlier in August, Egypt extended “the participation of the required elements of the armed forces in a mission abroad to defend Egyptian and Arab national security in the area of the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Bab El-Mandab Strait”, according to a presidential statement.

Although the extent of Egyptian forces’ participation is not clear, it is known that navy warships were deployed in the Red Sea to aid the campaign that is mainly conducted through airstrikes to quell Houthi rebel forces.
