Erdogan denies support for Al Qaeda in Syria

Erdogan: Turkey is not providing shelter or support to Al Qaeda-linked groups in Syria

Reuters – Turkey is not providing shelter or backing to al Qaeda-linked groups in Syria and will continue to exclude them from its broader support for the Syrian opposition, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday.

Turkey has long championed more robust backing for Syria’s fractious armed opposition, but the rise of al Qaeda-linked groups among their ranks has left it open to accusations that it is lending support to radical Islamists.

“It is out of the question that groups like al Nusra and al Qaeda can take shelter in our country,” Erdogan told a news conference in Stockholm during an official visit.

“On the contrary, any such structures would be subject to the same fight we carry out against separatist terrorist groups. We have taken the necessary steps against them and we will continue to do so,” he said.

Al Qaeda-linked groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have captured territory in parts of northern Syria near the border in recent months.

Turkey has maintained an open-door policy throughout the two-and-a-half-year conflict, providing a lifeline to rebel-held areas by allowing humanitarian aid in, giving refugees a route out and letting the rebel Free Syrian Army organise on its soil.

“Who we recognise among the Syrian rebels is a known fact. We are in contact with the Free Syrian Army … and we are also in touch with the (opposition) Syrian National Coalition,” Erdogan said.

“We provide all of our support and aid through these.”

  • Intellectualist

Erdogan is Al Qaeda. Who is he kidding? He follows the blind guru into a dead end alley and claims it wasn’t him. Islamism (theocracy of any brand) is a caustic agent on the fabric of society like battery acid on cotton. It slowly erodes society and fractures it into sectarian factions bent on killing each other and blind to any outside perspectives. He is Morsi in Turkey. A mentally impaired bigot with far to much power to be considered safe. Sanctions on Iran are headed to the dustbin, but sanctions on Turkey are inevitable. The storage of 60 nuclear bombs in Turkey is a particular concern. A chemical weaponized Al Qaeda has been averted but a nuclear one is still a major threat.

In whole Muslim world only Erdogan, Morsi and Ahemedinejad are the couragious leaders who can talk against violent Zionazis.

    • Intellectualist

Islamist bigots and zionazis are just two sides of the same coin. Neither side is relevant anymore.

  • Reda Sobky

Erdogan is a pathological and habitual lier. He is using his intelligence service against the aspirations of the Egyptian people and in support of the deposed fascists who he endorses and augments by covert actions including providing training and arms. In cases like this denial is actually confirmation as his values and behaviors are inverted to serve his sociopathic behavior. Wake up and look for yourself and see what he is saying and doing. He is the New Ottoman pretender, as though the Ottoman legacy is worth more than being placed in the dust heap of history. Please look closely at his words and the enemies of Egypt that he hosts and supports in the form of the terrorist caliphate organization…just that tells you a lot.
