Qena governor resigns in light of recent clashes in Egypt

By Kanzy Mahmoud

Qena governor Salah Abdel Meguid resigned Monday morning, according the information office of the Qena governorate.

The governor resigned “in protest of the recent bloodshed the Egyptian streets are witnessing, emphasising that he’s keen for the nation’s interests,” according to state-run Al-Ahram, which reported that Abdel Meguid  will carry out his duties until a successor is been appointed.

Political movements had accused Abdel Meguid of affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood and called for his resignation following 30 June protests, reported Al-Ahram.

Clashes between pro-Morsi supporters and the armed forces erupted Monday morning. The army claims that protestors tried to attack the Republican Guard Palace, while demonstrators accuse the army of initiating fire against them.

Former president Mohamed Morsi appointed Abdelmeguid, a former adviser to the undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment,  as governor of Qena on 17 June.
