The Western Cairo Prosecution unit referred on Saturday two police officers to the Criminal Court after being accused of aiding a suspect’s escape while escorting him to court, according to state media.
The officers, who belong to the Al-Basaten police station, allegedly assisted the suspect in his escape while they were escorting him to trial in the Abbasiya Court.
They are accused of facilitating the escape and sabotaging their work at the Ministry of Interior.
During the investigation, one of the officers confessed that the suspect was related to the other officer, adding that they maintained a close relationship while the suspect was in detention.
The other officer, however, denied the relationship. The suspect, who is reportedly a businessman, was detained on charges of forgery.
The two accused officers were suspended from work last January, along with another 63 officers who were charged by the Ministry of Interior with committing violations.
Last December, the Abu Sir Misdemeanour Court in Ismailia handed down prison sentences, ranging from one to two years, to 19 police officers that were assigned to secure Ismailia Future Prison during a jailbreak in October 2016.
Six inmates had fled the prison and engaged in an exchange of fire with police forces during their escape.
A civilian and an officer were killed during the clashes, which reportedly lasted for six hours.
The six fugitives include three terror suspects, who were arrested by National Security while trying to smuggle weapons through one of the villages on the borders of Ismailia to North Sinai.
