Security forces arrested five people after clashing with protesters in Alexandria, according to an official in the Ministry of Interior press office.

The arrested protesters were accused of breaking the protest law and rioting, the official stated. The protesters were arrested from different marches in Alexandria.

On Wednesday, the Anti-Coup Alliance released a statement calling for mass protests in preparation for the fourth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution under the slogan, “Together we save Egypt.”

Weekly marches and protests have become commonplace since security forces’ violent dispersals of the Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins in August 2013, often ending in violent dispersals and arrests.

Though numbers are contested, rights organisations state that thousands have been arrested since July 2013.
