Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat, head of the Reform and Development Party, issued a statement condemning Al-Wasat Party head Abu Elela Mady’s remarks made Tuesday in which he accused the General Intelligence Agency of secretly organising a ring of 300,000 “thugs” to undermine state security.

“The information that Mady provided is completely devoid of truth,” Sadat said. “It is a disgrace to the name of a great institution whose patriotism and integrity no one can question.”

Al-Sadat also encouraged the president to choose his friends more carefully, responding to Mady’s claims that he had received his information about this secret ring from “the president”.

“He should avoid political opportunists who will incite division with their words and actions and dismantle state institutions,” Sadat said. “We are in a critical situation where we must foster a climate of protection for the security and peace of the country.”

In response, Mady released a statement on the Al-Wasat Party’s website explaining that his comments had been taken entirely out of context and used by his opponents to cause political confusion. He had been referring to the former regime in his comments yesterday, describing their use of “thugs” in state institutions.

Mady stressed his and Al-Wasat’s loyalty to all state institutions, including the General Intelligence Agency, and expressed their desire to keep all such institutions away from political disputes.

“The party hopes that everyone will rise above such use of truncated phrases taken out of context for purposes of political confusion,” the statement said.
