The US Embassy in Cairo hosted “Pop-Up USA” in Mansoura, capital of Dakahleya Governorate in Egypt’s Delta, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence with residents of the region.
During the programme, Chargé d’Affaires Robert Silverman inaugurated an American Corner at the Misr Public Library of Mansoura alongside Dakahlia Governor Tarek Marzouk and Ambassador Reda Al-Taify of the Misr Public Libraries.
The American Corner will offer free in-person English-language courses and training in technology and other job skills, as well as access to more than 600 books and online resources that can be borrowed through the Misr Public Library.
The Embassy also hosted a Delta-wide football tournament for boys aged 12-13 from 26 sports clubs, a street festival featuring carnival games and information booths under the “Ask a Diplomat Anything” theme, and a concert of American music featuring American singer Samantha Takes, Egyptian singer and producer Ahmed El-Haggar, and the Cairo Big Band Society.
During his visit to Mansoura, Silverman also toured the historic Dar Ibn Luqman, where French King Louis IX was imprisoned in the Middle Ages following an attempted invasion of Egypt.
“Pop-Up USA in the Delta further strengthens the long-term US-Egypt partnership by making a commitment to engaging the youth of this dynamic region,” Silverman said.
“The American Corner will be a permanent feature of the great public library downtown, overlooking the Nile River,” he added.
Silverman noted that Mansoura is known as the medical capital of Egypt for its many medical specialists and facilities.
“We at the US Embassy also hope in the future it will be known for its specialists in understanding America,” he said.
