Raafat Hindy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, met with Sherif Abdel Fattah, board member of Intro Holding Group, and an accompanying delegation to follow up on implementation plans for the Kemet Data Centre project.
The centre is scheduled to be established in the Integrated Sokhna Industrial Zone, affiliated with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), to provide cloud solutions, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital transformation services.
Intro Holding Group is seeking to make the Kemet Data Centre the first project of its kind within the SCZONE to achieve Tier III classification and serve as a critical facility for major companies requiring advanced cloud capabilities and capacity. The group plans for the centre to reach a total capacity of 80MW, with investments in the first phase amounting to $270m.
During the meeting, Hindy stressed his ministry’s commitment to creating an attractive investment environment for the data centre industry and encouraging the private sector to establish advanced data centres in line with international standards. He noted that Egypt has competitive advantages that qualify it to expand its data centre industry.
He added that expanding the industry would help enhance digital transformation efforts, support the growth of cloud computing services, and meet the growing demand for data hosting and processing.
The meeting also reviewed the ministry’s efforts to encourage companies to invest in establishing data centres in Egypt, contributing to the growth of the industry and cloud computing sector and strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional hub for data centres.
Furthermore, the meeting discussed implementation procedures for establishing the centre, including the engineering designs completed to date, as well as contracts signed by the company with a number of suppliers to provide the equipment and facilities required for the project.
The target timetable for the various implementation phases and the launch of the centre’s services was also discussed.
The meeting was attended by Ahmed Badawy, Chairperson of the communications and information technology committee at the House of Representatives; Saad Roshdy, Head of the Central Administration for Resources and Technical Assistance and Supervisor of the Central Administration for Technology Projects and Outsourcing at the Ministry of Communications; Mohamed Al-Fowey, the minister’s Adviser for Telecommunications Technical Affairs; Hossam Zakaria, Director of the Ministry’s Smart Solutions Sector; and a number of ministry officials.
