Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected the first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 during a tour of several Transport Ministry projects in Cairo and Giza, as construction of the 19-kilometre phase continues.
The first phase extends from west of the Ring Road on the outskirts of 6th of October City to Fustat Station and comprises 17 stations, including 16 underground stations and one elevated station.
Madbouly said that Metro Line 4 would strengthen Egypt’s public transport network by connecting Cairo and Giza with new urban areas, while supporting urban development and tourism. He also highlighted the project’s role in encouraging greater reliance on modern mass-transit systems.
Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir said that the line is an important part of the ministry’s plan to expand modern and sustainable urban transport networks. He added that the line would improve connectivity between Cairo and Giza and, for the first time, link 6th of October City and New Cairo to the metro network.
The overall completion rate of the first phase has reached 65%, with civil works on the western section at 80%, eastern civil works at 46%, and electromechanical, track, and workshop works at 67%. Rolling-stock works have reached 48%.
The project is being implemented using six tunnel-boring machines simultaneously, a first for Egypt, according to the Transport Ministry.
At the line’s main maintenance workshop, Madbouly reviewed the status of train deliveries. Five trains have arrived in Egypt, with the latest delivered on September 5, 2026, and are currently undergoing static and dynamic testing. Factory tests have also been completed for trains six, seven, and eight, while train nine has been assembled and trains 10 through 16 are under manufacture. The line will operate with 23 trains.
The first phase includes a 316,500-square-metre maintenance and operations complex comprising 30 buildings for major and light overhauls, inspection, maintenance, washing, and storage of trains, as well as a high-voltage substation and an operations control centre.
At Hadayek Al-Ashgar Station, the first station of the phase and located west of the Ring Road, construction has reached 68.4%.
Metro Line 4 is planned to be implemented in four phases. The second phase, extending from Fustat to New Cairo, has already started, with sites being handed over to national construction companies. The 26.9-kilometre phase will include 21 stations.
The third phase, from Hadayek Al-Ashgar to Al-Hosary Square, and the fourth phase, from New Cairo to Capital Airport, are currently under study.
The line is designed to provide interchange with Metro Line 2 at Giza Station and Line 1 at King Al-Saleh Station. The second phase will also connect with the planned Line 6 at Sayeda Aisha and the East Nile Monorail at El-Tayaran Station.
A branch of the second phase is also being studied to connect with Cairo International Airport and provide interchange with Metro Line 3.
The third phase is planned to connect with the West Nile Monorail at Al-Hosary Station, while the fourth phase will connect with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) at Capital Airport Station in the New Capital. A proposed branch serving the Strategic Command is also expected to connect with the East Nile Monorail at Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque Station.
Al-Wazir noted that the line would serve densely populated areas including Haram, Faisal, Omrania, Giza, Nasr City, Al-Azhar University, and New Cairo. It will also pass several major tourist attractions, including the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and Historic Cairo.
Once fully completed, Metro Line 4 is expected to transport around 1.5 million passengers daily.
