Egypt and South Korea have opened an integrated simulation facility in Shabramant, Giza, to train workers in solid waste management as part of efforts to improve recycling, reduce emissions and transfer Korean environmental technologies and expertise to Egypt.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad inaugurated the project alongside Giza Governor Ahmed Al-Ansari and South Korean Ambassador to Cairo Kim Yonghyon. The project is funded by South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
The facility is designed to provide practical training that simulates real-world challenges faced by workers across the waste management system, helping them develop operational and decision-making skills while adopting modern methods to control emissions and reduce environmental impacts.
Awad said the project represents an investment in human capacity, knowledge and technical expertise rather than simply a new training facility.
She added that Egypt aims to use the partnership to transfer Korean technology and expertise in recycling, the circular economy and smart waste management solutions.
The project forms part of Egypt’s broader efforts to modernise its solid waste management system following the launch of a national strategy in 2019 aimed at improving public services, reducing environmental impacts and making more efficient use of resources.
Awad said Egypt hopes the Shabramant simulation model could eventually become a regional platform for capacity building and knowledge exchange serving Egypt, other Arab countries and Africa.
Al-Ansari said the project forms part of the integrated Shabramant complex and complements the sanitary landfill system at the site.
The facility will train waste management and recycling workers in modern operating methods designed to reduce emissions and transform waste into resources with economic value, he said.
The South Korean ambassador highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation between the two countries in artificial intelligence and the green economy, as well as Korean investment, technology transfer and industrial localisation in Egypt.
