Egypt has invested around EGP 169m in developing the waste management system in Matrouh Governorate as part of efforts to improve environmental services and expand integrated waste management infrastructure.
The figure was announced during a meeting between Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad and Matrouh Governor Mohamed El-Zamlout on Sunday at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.
The meeting reviewed efforts to improve waste collection, transportation and safe disposal across the governorate, particularly in Marsa Matrouh and tourist areas.
Awad called for continuous field monitoring and the immediate removal of waste accumulations in key and tourist areas to protect the governorate’s environmental and tourism assets.
The meeting also reviewed progress on projects included in Matrouh’s investment plan for fiscal year 2026/2027, including the paving and upgrading of internal roads, environmental improvements and local services.
Awad stressed the need to keep projects on schedule and address obstacles facing contractors and implementing agencies to ensure maximum benefit from investments allocated to the governorate.
El-Zamlout also presented investment opportunities in Matrouh and measures aimed at facilitating investment and resolving obstacles facing projects, with the goal of attracting additional capital, creating jobs and supporting the local economy.
Officials also reviewed progress on applications to legalise building violations and regulate the status of state-owned land.
Awad called for accelerating eligible applications and taking immediate action against new encroachments, while ensuring that recovered state land is protected from further violations.
The minister said the government would continue supporting development and infrastructure projects in Matrouh while seeking to make greater use of the governorate’s tourism, natural and investment potential.
